"Puppy" is a comedic horror film starring Calico Cooper, daughter of rock legend Alice Cooper, released in Garmany as "Waldile - Der Schlimme Killerhund". Punk'N [ Gary and Josh Forney ] provided two songs, "Amelia" & "Mojo Bone" for the film. The American DVD release also featured a music video for their song "Mojo Bone". A few weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to discover an interesting little amateur horror film called Puppy. After going to the film's website, I contacted one of the directors, Sony Green, and he was nice enough to send me a copy to review here on the site.
Puppy tells the story of a group of coeds that takes in the titular Schnauzer. What they don't know is that there's more to this cute little puppy than it seems.
The first thing I noticed about Puppy is that, in several scenes, it has the same "glow" as many 70's-era horror/exploitation films. If you don't know what I'm talking about, pop in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Last House On The Left and take note of the high-contrast, sharp, and bright aura that they have; the look of Puppy is similar, albeit slightly dimmer. To say the least, I was very impressed by this.
What I like most about Puppy is that the humor in it is actually funny, unlike a lot of other so-called comedy-horror films. The humor will catch you off guard at times; I found myself laughing out-loud in nearly every scene. My favorite "funny" moment in the film is a reference to Black Sabbath's Electric Funeral that you will never see coming.
Puppy also has tons of hilariously over-the-top gore and death scenes. This, coupled with the aforementioned humor, is what makes the film complete in my eyes. If you're a fan of T & A, Puppy also delivers in that area: Boobs, lingerie pillow-fights, shower scenes, you name it. I could definitely see this film playing in a grindhouse theater with a rowdy audience; it'd bring the house down.
One of the more unique things about Puppy is the music. The score by Astrad Zada and Jeff Dion is great, and I especially love the Puppy Theme by RadioStar SF.
I should note that, yes, this is a low-budget amateur horror film, and it's not without it's flaws. The ADR/dubbing is a bit off and the special effects are low-grade, however, I just can't hold that against it. Puppy is an exploitation/horror film; the flaws are what make it unique and they're what give the film it's character.
Puppy is a breath of fresh air. If you're one of those people who likes all the crap that Hollywood force-feeds horror fans these days, then I wouldn't recommend it to you. However, if you're like me, and you're starved for something original and unique, this is the film for you.
Needless to say, I highly recommend this film.
