Gary Forney: "I consider myself a poet first and the other stuff second."

Is this a kinder, gentler Gary Forney? The humble Iowan claims he is a poet first and "all the other stuff second." And what a tremendous amount of other stuff there is; he has self-published 7 books, written an autobiography, and been a cult icon as part of the song-poet subculture. His songs have been featured, like he mentioned, in "Off the Charts," a documentary on the song poem industry, as well as in "Song Poems Wanted!" a new musical about that very same industry.
Gary and his son Josh have a show coming up at the Orphanage on Sunday, April 20. I already shilled it under Andrew Heathwaite's profile.
Where do I begin finding the right poetry to characterize this man? I began by disecting portions of his books, which are usually epic poems broken into a few parts. I have chosen, with the blessing of the author, "Deja Vu," from his book "Here There Be Dragons" (1986) I think this represents the epic movement of voice Gary loves so very much.
Please enjoy. And if you see Gary this Sunday, for goodness sakes get him to autograph something.

Jumpin Beans & Willie / Gary & Josh Forney 7" (Ball)

YES! New Jumpin Beans! "I Like To Feel Real Bad!" You will! Especially when you hear the b-side, a completely f--ked blues number about Chicago from Gary & Josh Forney... smooth keys, bass, and "ripping" distorto guitar!

The scorching riffs of Josh coupled with your vocals is a combination that cannot be replicated. Rarely these days do I hear music that draws me in enough to want to learn more about the artist. Long story short, The Iowa Mountain Tour has changed my life, as well as many others, for the better.

You have permission to reproduce any part of my statement, including my name, since you kick so much ass.

P.S. I notice that you have an interest in the extraterrestrial. I highly recommend you read Communion by Whitley Streiber if you have not already.

I'm still performing, plus I'm working as a DJ for KPOW/KDRO for four years now.

A few years ago Gary Forney had an idea to bring songwriters together from around the country to the corn fields of Iowa for a Summer Solstice Songwriter Concert. It was lightly attended but still a great time and many friendships were made.
The following year, Gary thought it would be nice to take to the St Louis area and a guy from Belleville, a St Louis suburb, jumped in and slowly but surely wrestled the idea from Gary. The guy pushed Gary out of the picture totally and while the event was better attended than the first, it was not as organized. The next year the event was tied to a street party in Belleville, and fewer songwriters were involved. Each year the event has gotten smaller, until this year it is barely mentioned by anyone and is being held as an open mike in the back of a barroom.
What goes around comes around, and when the guy from Belleville stole the concept from Gary, he stepped on a lot of toes. Most serious songwriters will not have anything to do with the Belleville area at this time.
The world needs more Gary Forneys. Gary is good for the music world.
Robb

Meant to write you; your song was the best one in the Song- Poem musical. If we were filming on a day you were in town we would definitely try to have you on. As I said, the quality of your song stood out from the others in the play, a testament that you transcend song-poem cliches.

Hey Gary: Wanted to let you know there was a Full house at the theater and great response!!! They loved your song, "Aliens Stole My Dog".. One of the highlight songs of the show. Your song has now been moved to the opening song in our show! Please spread the word about SONG-POEMS WANTED! The Musical and if you could make it that would be great!

"[ Gary Forney is ] One of only maybe one or two rock stars I know doing something different who's going to make it!" ~Cynthia Plaster Caster~

The Big Apple?

"I am reading your autobiography. It's very, very good and interesting. Gary,
you really should try to organize some sort of reading or event in NYC. I know
it may be expensive to travel, but try to save for it. I bet lots of song-poems
fans are out here, and they would come check out your show because they've seen
that movie. THEN they could be introduced to your art and stuff. Especially if
you have more copies of Bat-Rat.
Hope you are well!"

"We gave your music a listen,

                                                       Keep up the good work!"

Corey - Apelis Productions

The vast majority of folks who've seen Off the Charts
see it as a deeply human and affecting film, yes there those a-holes who see it as a chance to laugh at others, and don't take it seriously, but why focus on those jerks, you and I and anyone doing anything decent will never win them over anyway and why would we want to?

Jamie Meltzer - producer

Hey Gary

Wanted to share some good news. Our show was chosen to be produced this summer at the Stages Festival in Chicago weekend of August 21! It will be directed by the artistic director himself John Sparks. There will be a lot of publicity and probably an after theater song-poem show. There will be some royalties issued but not much since it's only 2 or 3 performances.

Hope all is well with you. Say hi to your family for me.

Art Kaufman [ David Fox ]

I saw you last night on a documentary called "Off the Charts" and saw your band ~ found you very attractive. I kept ranting through the film ~ on how good looking you were. Tall ~ and a sense of style.

.GARY!
This is DeWitt . We corresponded a few years ago. I went broke, lost internet for ages but I am finally in school (second year for film/video) and I made an awesome video I'd love to mail you. It's a 3D video I made with "The Future Ain't What It Used To Be" as the primary soundtrack. I think you'd love it. Anywho, how are you? You and Josh still performing?

Hey Gary,
My name is Adam Kastin, I love your music. I am interested in being involved with your film in any way shape or form. The group I am in has been dedicated to the support and pursuit of truly great artists and independent music, and that is how I came upon you.
I can act, I can sing, sometimes I can even play saxaphone. Let me know of any news

a NEW BLUES LEGEND?

~an open statement to Gary's stalker~

Do you really think saying he can't sing is an insult? That's the whole point! His music is written for regular people, like himself, to perform, and enjoy, not opera singers or highly trained musicians. That being said, it's while listening to Gary Forney that I recall blues men who have been dead for decades. That is what makes Punk'N so great. If you don't like the songs themselves, that's another matter, but remember, this is a musical fusion of past legends and legends yet to be.

Phil S.

You are awesome Gary!~ Just found you today, but you are a legend man!
